Accident Kills College-Bound Teen

Car Crash

A car accident late Saturday night left an 18-year-old Washington Township High School senior dead and several others seriously injured. Nicole Kellenyi died when the car she was riding in collided with a pickup truck on Pitman Downer Road. Three other occupants, including 18-year-old Taylor Petner, were taken to Cooper Hospital Trauma Center for treatment. Joann Finnegan, 48, the driver of the pickup truck, received treatment for her injuries at Kennedy Hospital Washington Township. Only one person, Patrick Finnegan, escaped the accident without sustaining any physical damage.

The Gloucester County Times reports that police are investigating the accident to determine, if alcohol was involved in the collision.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families and friends. Their sudden loss is unimaginable. On Facebook, friends of Kellenyi are distributing a petition asking for a traffic signal at the intersection where the accident occurred, according to Philly.com. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the accident that killed Nicole to please contact Cpl. Preston Forchion of the Traffic Safety Unit.

As of April 2012, six people have died in traffic accidents in Gloucester County, according to the New Jersey State Police. This latest crash represents the second fatal traffic incident in Washington Township. Last year, there were 26 traffic-related deaths in Gloucester County with two deaths occurring in Washington Township. With eight months to go until the end of the year, the township has already equaled its fatal accident total from 2011.

Driver in Fatal Chesterfield School Bus Accident Just Passed Commercial Driving Test

chesterfield school bus accident

New developments have been made in the investigation of the Chesterfield school bus accident that occurred last week which left one child dead and another 17 injured. It was found that driver John Tieman only received his commercial driver’s license on January 26—exactly three weeks before this tragic accident.

NBC Philadelphia reported that while he had just obtained his license neither he nor the other driver involved in the crash had active points on their driving records. They went on to say that Motor Vehicle Commission sources revealed that Tieman’s last traffic violation was in 2007 when he was ticketed for obstructing the passage of another driver, which carries no points.

However he did receive a careless driving violation back in 1994; he was operating a passenger vehicle. The driver of the dump truck, Michael Caporale, was ticketed for reckless driving in 2003. He also had a speeding ticket on his record from 1997, the ticket was issued in Virginia.

The crash is still under investigation. On a happier note, it was reported that Natalie Tezsla, daughter of NJ State Police Sgt. Anthony Tezsla, was released from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Her sister Sophie and Jonathan Zdybel (who was also injured in the crash) remain in critical condition. Our thoughts go out to their families.

Emmaus High School students mourn the loss of 17-year-old Benjamin Albro, who was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Lower Milford Township on Thursday, February 16th. Albro, a member of the rifle team at Emmaus High School, lost control of his vehicle on Palm Road, which then hit a tree and flipped over, landing on its roof. Benjamin Albro was pronounced dead at the scene of the Pennsylvania car accident. The crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m. just hours after Albro had competed in the state championship rifle event.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of Benjamin Albro during this difficult time.

According to a 2009 report released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, run-off-road “crashes contribute to a large proportion of fatalities and serious injuries to the vehicle occupants in fatal single-vehicle crashes (around 70% of the fatal single-vehicle crashes are ROR crashes).” Further down in the same report, it also states that “the most influential factor in the occurrence of fatal single-vehicle ROR crashes is the driver performance-related factor: sleepy, followed by alcohol use, roadway alignment with curve, vehicle speeding, passenger car, rural roadway, high-speed-limit road, adverse weather, and crash-avoiding.”

If you have been injured in a car accident, contact a personal injury lawyer in New Jersey or Pennsylvania to learn more about your rights as a victim. Depending on the details of your case, you may be entitled to financial compensation for your medical bills, rehabilitation costs, or other damages suffered as a result of the car accident.

NJ Transit Aims to Make Railways Safer

Train Crossing with Speeding Train, near Casa Grande, Arizona, USA

The Daily Targum reported that NJ Transit is making moves to reduce the number of train fatalities in the state. Some may be wondering whether or not there is a real need. How many people are dying due to train accidents in New Jersey?

Well, injuries and fatalities resulting from a train accident are more common than you think. According to the Federal Railroad Administration there were 527 incidents in New Jersey involving injury or death due to a train accident in 2010—24 of which were fatalities.

There were two key accidents back in October that sparked the formation of the Safety Along Railroads Leadership Oversight Committee. The accidents occurred on October 2 and 3 in Wayne and Garfield respectively. These two accidents resulted in the death of three teenagers and left a fourth teen injured.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation commissioner, James Simpson spoke about the new safety measures in a press release earlier this week. He explained that, “Nothing at NJDOT or N.J. Transit matches the importance of safeguarding the lives of those who use New Jersey’s extensive, multi-modal transportation system… We dedicate the efforts that will spring from this safety initiative to all who have endured tragedy along our railroads and to all who we will protect in the future”

Their main focus will be engineering, education, and enforcement according to the news report. According to the Targum, to improve safety from an engineering standpoint they will investigate the effectiveness of, “the effectiveness of gate skirts and ‘second train coming’ warning signs.”

It was reported that the accident in Garfield involved two trains traveling one after another. It is speculated that the teens involved thought after the first train passed; it was okay to pass under the barrier without realizing that there was a second train coming. The new ‘second train warning’ would have a separate second alert when there is a train approaching following the first train’s passing.

The NJDOT release explained that they are recommending 12 items that they consider high-priority and they hope to have them completed or initiated inside a year.
