Construction Sign Kills Woman on PA Turnpike

Road Work Sign

A Norristown woman died Monday in a freak car accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. A box truck’s side mirror struck a construction sign along the Turnpike, which sent the sign airborne and hurtling towards Emily Morris’ sedan. The sign crashed through her Passat’s windshield and struck her in the head causing her to lose control of the vehicle.  Morris, 31, later died from her injuries at Reading Hospital, according to WFMZ-TV.

Morris worked for Montgomery Media as a web editor and as a freelance editor for the “Lebanon Daily News”. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends as they cope with this sudden and unimaginable loss. An accident of this type may leave more questions than answers for Emily’s survivors.

In 2010, there were 121,312 reported car crashes in Pennsylvania. Those accidents resulted in the deaths of 1,324 people across the state. During that same year, 2,525 crashes were reported on the Pennsylvania Turnpike with 1,297 people injured and 16 killed, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. While fatal accidents on the PA Turnpike are relatively rare given the road’s total length, that doesn’t mean drivers shouldn’t remain vigilant for aggressive behavior and other factors that increase the risk of serious accidents.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an auto accident due to another driver’s negligence or fault, you may be entitled to compensation. Contacting a team of Philadelphia car accident lawyers is an important step in standing up for your rights and holding at-fault parties responsible. Don’t give in to pressure from your insurance company or individual to sign documents agreeing to a settlement prior to speaking with your legal advocates. Doing so could limit your ability to pursue damages to pay for your continuing medical costs, replace your lost wages and help restore your quality of life.

Teen Injured in Philadelphia Dog Attack

15 year old injured in pit bull attack

A 15-year-old boy was seriously injured in a dog bite incident after he was attacked by a pit bull that escaped from its owner’s yard. According to NBC 10 Philadelphia, the vicious dog attack occurred in the 5900 block of Shisler Street in the Oxford Circle section of the city on April 3, 3012. Officials say witnesses told them the teenager was with a group of boys when two pit bulls escaped their owner’s home on the 5900 block of Belden Street. One of the escaped dogs began to chase the teenager and while his friends managed to get on top of a neighbor’s car behind a fence, the teen didn’t make it.

The dog then bit the boy in the face. Witnesses said the teen’s eyelid was hanging. His face was cut up, mouth bloodied and clothes ripped up. The teen was taken to a local hospital, suffering from multiple wounds to his face and body. Both dogs were confiscated by animal control and investigators say the owner of the animals was handed a summary dangerous dog citation. It’s unclear as to whether criminal charges will be filed.

My heart goes out to this injured dog attack victim. I wish him the very best for a speedy and full recovery.

Forbes Magazine Rates Philadelphia Among 10 Comeback Cities

Philly Top 10 City

The City of Brotherly Love is making a comeback. A recent Forbes magazine article showed that more taxpaying households are moving back into the area to both live and work. While many American cities are suffering in these economic times, Philadelphia’s recent rating speaks of the possible prosperity the city has to offer.

With more people coming to the area, the chances of personal injury are heightened. More people means more vehicles on the roadway, as well as increased crime figures. One could only hope that is not the case, and that a more prominent population means overall prosperity for all who call Philadelphia home.

According to Forbes, nearly 40 million people moved from one region to another within the United States in 2011 and “as recently as 2005, Allegheny County lost nearly 10,000 members of taxpaying households, according to IRS data. But in 2009, the losses turned to gain: after several years of both growing in-migration and falling out-migration, more taxpayers moved to Allegheny County than moved out that year.”

Pittsburgh joined Philadelphia in the Pennsylvania resurgence, recovering from its struggles in the 1980’s due to the closure of steel plants. Like Philadelphia and Rocky Balboa, the city is making a comeback. The other places that made the top ten list were New Orleans, Denver, Boston, Washington, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Texas and Virginia.

Philadelphia has seen a 35,145 person spike in population from 2005 through 2010, meaning that men and women are seeing a better Philadelphia.

With the prospect of more people coming into the area comes an increased risk to human safety.

A Tri-City news report revealed how a population increase in a Canadian City resulted in more harm through fires. The Coquitlam Fire Chief Tony Delmonico stated that calls to his department annually could nearly double in the next several decades. “We attribute it mainly to population increases. Our role hasn’t changed. We have been identified as a high-growth community and we are going to see added pressures because of that,’’ he said.

The fact more people are likely to be in destruction’s way in urban populations than in the suburbs is cause for action. It is important that when one moves into a new area, they become familiar with all emergency service contacts just in case of a fire, crime or accident. It is also important to have the number of a Pennsylvania personal injury attorney at hand.

On Wednesday, February 15th a jury found 56-year-old former police officer guilty on multiple charges for his involvement in a deadly crash on April 19th, 2011. William Bell collided with a vehicle head-on, and the other driver, 50-year-old Barbara Brown, was killed as a result of the Pennsylvania car accident. Bell was a Philadelphia police officer for 14 years before joining the secret service and then obtaining a private investigator’s license in 1993. He was found guilty of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence (his BAC was almost 3 times the legal limit) among other charges and faces a minimum sentence of 3 to 6 years in prison.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Barbara Brown, who was killed in the head-on collision last April.

According to Homicide by vehicle while driving under influence – 75 Pa. Cons.
