The holidays are a time for bonding with family and friends, catching up, and eating, so much eating. With so many tempting treats it’s hard to keep a healthy perspective, but here are a few staples that Health.com thinks you should definitely avoid.
1. Swedish Meatballs. Filled with all sorts of not-good-for-you ingredients, this is one classic you should pass on. Each meatball could contain at least 400 calories.
2. Eggnog. This holiday staple has half of your USDA recommended limit of cholesterol. In addition to that each glass has more than 340 calories.
3. Creamed Spinach. You may be shocked to learn that when vegetables are loaded with cream, butter, and cheese they aren’t as healthy as they are plain. Surprising, but true. Best to stick to the less cheesy variety of veggie.
4. Cheesecake. Are you really surprised about this? Add all the various toppings and you have one food that is sure to go right to your thighs.
5. Candied Yams. Add sugar to a vegetable and it may be more appetizing, but certainly not healthier. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices in the name of nutrition.
6. Dark-Meat Turkey. Generally speaking, turkeys have a lot of lean meat on them, but beware of the dark meat and the skin. It may be delicious but it also has more calories and fat per serving than the white meat.
7. Cranberry Sauce. A serving of jellied cranberry sauce doesn’t offer anything healthy. Instead you get a slice of calories, carbs, sodium, and sugar…yum.
8. Prime Rib. It may be delicious, but it is one of the fattiest parts of a cow. You can expect more than 700 calories in just one slice of this beef, and that’s in addition to 450 milligrams of cholesterol.
9. Green Bean Casserole. Again, covering vegetables with unhealthy ingredients depletes the nutritional value. Try revamping this classic by replacing the fried onions with another crunch like water chestnuts.
10. Glazed Ham. Once more a seemingly healthy dish quickly diminishes in nutritional value. If you limit the amount of sugar used in the glaze and substitute it with jam or mustard you can still have a tasty dinner.
