The news has been flooded with reports of the horrific cruise ship accident off the cost of Italy. Some news outlets are even calling it a modern day Titanic, and for one New Jersey couple it really did feel that way. NBC New York reported that Addie King and Michael Stoll of Brick Township were on that cruise ship and thankfully made it home safe.
The search for survivors of the cruise liner Costa Concordia continues with the death toll going up each day as rescue crews search for unaccounted for passengers. King and Stoll arrived home earlier this week, thankful to be alive.
“Literally, if you’ve seen ‘Titanic,’ it was the scene right out of that—all the plates, everything flying off the table,” Stoll explained.
The captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino, has been taken into custody and charged with manslaughter and abandonment of his ship. It was reported that he failed to remain on board until all passengers were safely off the ship; in an act of cowardice he abandoned his post.
Stoll was not happy with the actions of the captain and who could blame him? He said that, “Not only [was] he…[unable] to think or function under pressure, he abandoned us.” Stoll and King had to make some quick decisions when the ship was sinking. They contemplated just swimming to shore, but were able to find a rescue boat that allowed the two on board.
As of Wednesday there were still 24 people missing.
